Effect of video games on children Essay

Over the span of this examination, various critical realities were found. The first point question for the examination was â€Å"the mental and physical impact of computer games on children†. The measure of data examined on the mental impact was a great deal and therefore the theme question for the examination was then changed to â€Å"the mental impact of computer games on children†. The primary purpose behind inquiring about this point was the way that there are a great deal of little youngsters on the planet who play hugely savage games. Numerous kids and their folks overlook the game rating. Numerous guardians don't comprehend the unfavorable impact that those computer games would have on the youthful child’s developing cerebrum. Research which is talked about underneath in detail has demonstrated that rough computer games have an extraordinary mental impact on the youngsters which makes them become forceful immaturity. This thusly influences their social and individual life in a significant manner. The investigated data shows that savage computer games are unmistakably destructive to kids and the two guardians and youngsters must comply with the game rating in the event that they need solid and rather quiet kids. Computer games have been accessible to the client for around 30 years now. The games have developed enormously. They just began as 2D arcade games and now they have developed to 4D computer generated reality. One of the principle inquired about subtopic has been computer games and the time kids spend playing them. The time that youngsters spent playing computer games changes incredibly as per sexual orientation. An examination/study directed in 2004 by Gentile, Lynch, Linder and Walsh expressed that juvenile young ladies played computer games for a normal of 5 hours every week though young men played a normal of 13 hours. Presently this all-inclusive measure of time spent playing computer games influences the kids from multiple points of view. The time which they could’ve spent considering is spent playing computer games. This may seem, by all accounts, to be a decrease in scholastic accomplishment. A similar report directed by Gentile, Lynch, Linder and Walsh likewise expresses that youngsters additionally will in general become progressively forceful in nature, increasingly inclined to standing up to their instructors and furthermore get into a great deal of battles with their companions. The examination shows that computer games influence the youngster mentally as well as socially. It influences the person’s relationship with companions and close ones. In an investigation by Walsh in 2000, dominant part of the young people conceded that their folks don’t force time limit. In an overview directed without anyone else, the outcomes obviously show that 30% of the individuals play computer games multiple times each week. Another profoundly explored subtopic has been computer game rating. Guardians will in general disregard the game evaluations of a game and furthermore the alerts on the game that state that they are unacceptable for youngsters. An exploration approved by the UK game industry found that guardians let small kids play grown-up games. The primary purpose behind this was the way that guardians thought their kids were sufficiently experienced to mess around route past their age level. This point of view of guardians is quite questioned by Modulum scientist Jurgen Freund. He proposes that guardians think their youngsters are adult and that the game won't have an effect on the kid. Guardians appear to see age evaluations as a guide however not as a denial as indicated by him. It has been accounted for that 39% of UK guardians overlook the rating on videogames. A study directed without anyone else demonstrated that half of the kids don't follow the game appraisals. Computer games are exceptionally addictive. This is on the grounds that, when the player draws in into the game, he/she is in the game world. This present reality is turned off for him/her for that timeframe. As the player has no clue about this present reality, he/she don't understand the measure of time spent playing the game. Habit of computer games has caused numerous genuine consequences for youngsters over the previous years. These genuine impacts additionally incorporate demise. On December 27th 2004, a multi year old Warcraft player ended it all by bouncing off a structure so as to join the legends of the game. This point of joining the saints was shown by his self destruction note. Taking everything into account it is plainly apparent that computer games have an extremely negative impact on kids and their development. Right off the bat, youngsters ought to be checked all through their young life with the goal that nothing awful influences them in their youth as this will influence the kid in his later years. Guardians ought to likewise have a hang on the measure of time the kid spends playing computer games. The time went through ought not meddle with the time that the youngster could have gone through playing with companions and mingling. Guardians ought to carefully follow the game appraisals and ought to impart following the game rating into their kids. Little youngsters ought not play grown-up games. This ought to be done on the grounds that vicious games cause the youngsters to turn out to be progressively forceful and thus it develops the children into brutal teenagers. These vicious youths develop into forceful, furious and rather fierce grown-ups. On the off chance that the individual is brutal almost certainly, that individual won't have numerous companions and won't regularly mingle. This will make that individual be desolate and rather discouraged. The guardians ought to authorize solid principles in regards to the time spent playing the computer games and set a specific time week by week that the kids may play the computer games. The guardians should likewise carefully follow the game evaluations and ensure that they just purchase games for their kids which fit their age gathering. Guardians should ensure that their children don't become ‘gameholics’ yet rather ought to invest more energy with companions and be out socially. On the off chance that all the above are trailed by guardians, at that point there is a decreased danger of mental issues creating in kids from an extremely youthful age. Whenever looked cautiously it is clear that guardians assume a significant job in the child’s development and advancement. Gentile, D. A. , Lynch, P. , Linder, J. and Walsh, D. (2004). Ive Got 99 Problems Admissions Is Not One

“I’ve Got 99 Problems… Admissions Is Not One” Okay, so its really 52, but whos counting? So far Ive been fairly serious with my entries about the college admissions process. I think that its time for me to lighten the mood around here. So to all of you uber-serious folk back away slowly and no one will get hurt. As most of you know, Ive been on an AWARD TOUR WITH MOHAMMED MY MAN. And everywhere I go, you want to know the skinny on how to get into MIT. The more I try to tell everyone that just showing your passion and being yourself is enough, the more I get the yeah, r-i-g-h-t look. So lets try another tactic. I know that you love numbers, stats and checklists, so heres a checklist for the ages. 52 THINGS NOT TO DO IF YOU WANT TO BE ADMITTED TO MIT: Dont refer to yourself in the 3rd person. It doesnt work for pro athletes and it wont work for you. Dont use the flashback essay. You know, the one that envisions you receiving the Nobel Prize in Biology and attributing all of your success to your admission to MIT. Yeah, thats about as original as the obligatory standing ovation at the end of an Ashante concert. (This is NOT an endorsement of Ashante or her inability to maintain pitch control, not lip-sync at live performances, or to write lyrics that use Boo as a pronoun.) Do not use words that do not exist irregardless of how much you orientate the direction of your essay. Avoid slang. Use street cred on your own time. If you want to keep it real get an A in Calculus. Thats hot! Never refer to your parents as Mommy and Daddy, your dog as your best friend, or your girlfriend as your Ride or Die. In that same vein, if your mother really is your hero youd make your bed, refrain from calling your younger brother a mistake, and stop taking the cable box apart for poops and giggles. Do not quote Holden Caufield in your essay. (Its a good way to share A ROOM WITH MARK DAVID CHAPMAN.) Additionally, dont use quotes from Fountainhead or Jugghead. The Every Important Lesson I Learned in Life, I Learned From Wolverine essay has been tried. (Feel free the ask the author how hes enjoying his PG year.) There is no reason to use the word nipple anywhere on your application. Unless you work for Bad Boy Records, The death of Biggie and Tupac do not count as defining moments in your life. Under the section labeled Extracurricular Activities, do not list the following: Being a great boyfriend/girlfriend; 20 hours per week. Never quote the MasterCard commercial that ends with the word PRICELESS. Know what the hell you are talking about! Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. The New Radicals are a one hit wonder 80s pop band. (You only get what you give!) Refrain from cutting and pasting whole sections of our web site to use in your essay. (If you do cut and paste, please use quotation marks and change the font to match that of your document.) NEVER CUT AND PASTE BETWEEN COLLEGE ESSAYS. If we receive an essay that states, and thats why Harvard is my dream school WELL TRY REAL HARD TO MAKE YOUR DREAM COME TRUE. Think carefully before quoting music lyrics. If you must do it, Gwen Stefanis chorus is I aint no holla back girl NOT I aint no Harlem Black Girl. The same goes with movies. Yes, Cool Hand Luke is steeped in allegory and I do believe that it is a modern parallel of Christ. No, I do not accept that Mean Girls is anything but a tween movie. Dont submit anything written or drawn with a Crayola or Sharpie. Dont use statistics as proof of your excellence if there were less that 10 others that you competed against. We TOO know the power of small numbers. No matter how tight your argument is, Halo groups are not extracurricular clubs and your mastery of said game is not a skill. Dont attend MIT Central Meetings and pick fights with the Admissions staff. You want us to remember you in good ways. Dont rely solely on your 2400 SAT/36 ACT scores to get you into MIT. Dont count yourself out if you have considerable lower scores than those listed above. (Ed. note: or if you spell like Bryan does.) DO NOT EVER BELIEVE THAT IF YOU ARE A STUDENT OF COLOR THAT YOU WILL BE ADMITTED SOLELY BECAUSE OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. If you are not a student of color dont fall into the trap of thinking you wont be admitted because of Affirmative Action. If you are admitted, it will be because of merit. If not, it wasnt because someone else took your spot. Dont spend your entire essay telling us about what you want to be after you leave MIT. Instead tell us what you want to do at MIT. Do not let the costs of MIT deter you from applying to MIT. We have this thing called Financial Aid. If you dont apply, you cant afford it. Dont take college advice from your crazy know-it-all uncle whose only experience with MIT was the time his car broke down on Mass Ave back in 1974. IF YOU ARE NOT PASSIONATE ABOUT LEARNING AND MIT, IT WILL SHOW IN YOUR APPLICATION. Dont let more than three people critique your essay. If you do, youll get conflicting messages and your voice will be lost forever. Life is not like a box of chocolates. If you know who the Wiggles are for whatever reason keep it to yourself. Anything with the words Graphic Novel on the cover IS a comic book. Dont quote it. Dont apply to MIT solely because your best friend suggests it. Do you really think well be impressed by the poster that has your head superimposed on the body of Arnold and is titled: I have the will, show me the way? Use Photoshop responsibly. Dont call us repeatedly hoping that well give you a decision early. Youll know when you know. Do not have your parents call on your behalf. Enough said. NEVER question MATT McGANN. He is of the MIT Omnibus. Do not write to admissions officers using email addresses that contain lewd expressions. (Ed. note: I removed Bryans example. It was that bad.) There is no way to convince me that the Designated Hitter rule is good for Baseball. Dont even try. In terms of your intended major, dont confuse undecided with I dont know what I want. In other words, undecided means that you are struggling to decide between disciplines; not I dont know. Dont blow off your interview or wait until the last minute to make an appointment. Dont use profanity in your essay, even if youre quoting someone. Dont spend your time looking for the Admissions back door. No matter what you read on College Confidential, it doesnt exist. There is only one entrance to the Infinite Corridor, and thats through the admissions committee. Dont use canned essays if you do, well use canned rejection letters. Dont send a bejillion letters of recommendation. We know that most of you have only lived for 17 or 18 years. We dont expect you to have a ton of experiences. Id say more than 5-6 letters is really pushing it. Remember, well read everything that you send us. Dont abuse this. If I read a letter from your milkman saying that you like strawberry yogurt, Im gonna be pissed. NEVER EMBELLISH. I know that you are smart enough not to lie. Do not let your desire to attend MIT overshadow your integrity. This is an area that we see as absolute and black and white. Do not miss deadlines! Not for the CSS Profile or any part of the application. In that vein, dont wait until October 31st (early) or December 31st (regular) to apply, especially if you plan to apply online. If the server is down for some reason, youre screwed. Dont slack off academically or do something stupid that could put your admission in jeopardy. MIT giveth and MIT taketh away. Admission to MIT is like wearing spandex in public its a privilege not a right.

The Dalai Lama and Dolly the Lamb - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 712 Downloads: 4 Date added: 2019/08/08 Category Science Essay Level High school Tags: Cloning Essay Did you like this example? The Dalai Lama and Dolly the lamb, what could these two possibly have in common? The Dalai Lama being the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and Dolly, a lamb. The answer is nothing except a confused middle schooler in science class. I first heard about Dolly the lamb and confused it with the Dalai Lama. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Dalai Lama and Dolly the Lamb" essay for you Create order I believed the Dalai Lama to be a person that was being cloned over and over to allow for the same spiritual leader into perpetuity. The reality is that Dolly the lamb was the first mammal generated using reproductive cloning (Singh-Cundy.) What exactly does cloning mean and where does it show up in everyday life? According to Michael Rugnetta, a writer for Brittanica.com, cloning is a process used to create an identical genetic copy of a cell or an organism. It occurs regularly within prokaryotic organisms like bacteria that use binary fission to replicate. Do eukaryotic organisms use cloning as well? Yes, they do, the skin cells of the body are created through mitosis which creates two identical daughter cells. However, the human body also has sexual reproductive organs that use meiosis and create gametes that help increase diversity within the population (Singh-Cundy.) Reproductive cloning requires three steps. The first necessitates an egg is taken from a donor and the nucleus is removed. Second, an electrical current is used to fuse the egg and with a somatic cell and chemicals are added to trick the cells into forming an embryo. Finally, the embryo is implanted into a surrogate mother and fingers crossed, a baby animal is born (Singh-Cundy.) This specific type of cloning used to make Do lly is something we hear about every so often in the news, this family paid an exorbitant amount of money to clone their beloved family dog. Barbra Streisand paid for her dog, Sammie to be cloned and the process created five puppies, three of which she kept (Streisand.) A gentleman from Louisiana paid more than $100,000 to a foundation in Korea to have his dog cloned and he is not alone. The organization in Korea is not the only one of its kind, in Texas, another company called ViaGen has established a cloning animal operation. The company originally cloned horses and livestock but, they have switched gears to land in the cloning of house pets (Landman.) Cloning is used to create loved pets, does it appear anywhere else? It has appeared in livestock such as sheep, horses, and pigs. Livestock cloning was were this reproductive cloning started but, where has it gone? Are people drinking milk produced from cows that are clones, are people eating steaks from a cloned a cow? If we are consuming these goods, are we endangering ourselves? The FDA states that eating cloned animals poses no additional risks to the consumer. Due to that determination no labels need to be placed on food that may be made from cloned animals. However, cloned animals are mainly used to reproduce the best breeding stock and then those animals are allowed to breed. The offspring of the cloned animals are then the ones to be consumed (USDA.) In a contradicting article written by the Center for Food Safety, it states that the cloned animals struggle with reproducing healthy offspring and often become lame. The propensity for these problems would lead to a higher amount of antibiotics and hormones given to the animals. An additional article also calls into question the study size used by the FDA to say cloned food is safe. The article claims one of the studys only had six animals that had their milk and meat analyzed. If the FDA had originally based all their claims on this study, done by the University of Connecticut, it would hold no value, as six animals is too small a group size to draw any claims on (Scientific American.) The FDA states that since the use of that study from 2008, hundreds of cloned animals have been observed. The act of cloning seems to play an increasing part in our day to day life. The question of whether we are eating cloned food, isnt able to be distinctly answered. We may be but, until the government decides to pass legislation to make it necessary to tell the public, we wont know.

Chartism Working Class and National Political Movement Free Essays

TMA 02 Task 1 In the history block, you learned about three explanations for Chartism’s support – a reaction to economic pressure, national political movement and an inclusive cultural community. What evidence is there in the extract above of three explanations for Chartism’s support that you learned about in the history chapter of Y180, and which, if any, is stressed most strongly by the speaker? Part 1 In no more than 200 words, write a plan for this essay Introduction: 1. Explain the background and context of the extract 2. We will write a custom essay sample on Chartism: Working Class and National Political Movement or any similar topic only for you Order Now This essay will consider the evidence for Chartism’s support in terms of economic pressure, popular radicalism, and cultural inclusiveness 3. It will argue all three factors contributed to Chartism’s support but political focus is dominant Economic pressure: 1. 1837-42 were periods of economic downturn, Chartism attracted support by addressing economic circumstances – mention class legislations 2. Manufacturing population under-represented in the electoral system 3. Mention Asa Briggs, secondary source 1, who highlights the significance of economic circumstances A national political movement: 1. Indicate how Chartism was built on pre-existing support for electoral reform 2. State the popular proposed class legislation changes 3. Use primary source 6 to show the heritage of popular radicalism and the public’s want for reform 4. Mention the use and importance of political language 5. Back up this view with Stedman Jones, secondary source 2 Cultural incisiveness: 1. Chartism welcomed those that were excluded from power in every other way – the working class 2. Mention Ellen Yeo, secondary source 3 to support this 3. Ideal of power to the people Conclusion: 1. Evidence for all 3 factors 2. Final reflection – political movement is most stressed 200 words Part 2 Write the essay, using no more than 800 words. In this essay I shall consider how all three explanations contributed to Chartism’s support and which factor can be seen as the most dominant. The speech made by an unknown speaker in 1839 is a primary source of information from the Northern Star newspaper, the ‘main voice in print’ (P. 107) of Chartism, and therefore we cannot be sure of its reliability. The motive exists to exaggerate the audiences’ size and enthusiasm, numbers of ‘between 5,000 and 12,000’ (Background) and comments such as ‘loud cheering’ (L. 2) could have been fabricated. The report was published in Chartism’s early years, a time of economic recession and social tension when the Whig party held power. The extract highlights the audiences’ economic circumstances making some references to inclusivity, however I believe politi cal focus is the key theme. To begin with I shall consider economic pressure. Paragraph four of the extract focuses on this factor, the speaker makes several remarks which relate to and evidences the audience’s poverty such as ‘ragged clothing’, ‘insufficiency of food’, and ‘insufferable despair’. Chartism attracted support by instilling hopefulness that if democracy was put into practice, people’s economic anguish would lessen, namely that the Poor Law of 1834 would be discarded and taxes reduced. Chartism became an established movement due to a structural transfer in the economy from agriculture to manufacturing; the working classes in these industrial areas were under-represented. Manufacturing industries were prevalent in York and the surrounding areas therefore these economic factors would be close to the audience’s hearts. Briggs, secondary source 1, supports this view by arguing manufacturing communities displayed the strongest support whilst rural areas showed considerably less. The explanation of Chartism being a national political movement is strongly evidenced in the extract. The speaker expresses many political ideas, talking of an end to the established church, as well as addressing class legislations such as opposition to the Poor Law. The speaker states, ‘abolish the army, dash the navy’ (L. 48) ‘crush the church by law established, obliterate the debt from the national ledger, restore republicanism, establish equality’ (L. 50–L. 51). These are long established ideals of popular radicalism which evidences the movement’s political diversity and shows Chartism was able to draw on pre-existing radical support for democratic reform. An account from the Morning Chronicle, primary source 6, shows a flag used during the procession which carried the National Petition to Parliament sporting the phrase ‘we require justice before charity’ (p125). This proposes demonstrators would not be happy with an ‘economic hand-out’ (p126) instead wanting acknowledgment of their political rights; this paper was pro-Whigs so has reason to downplay anti-government protests so may be reliable. Chartist’s had their own political language and this is strong evidence for Chartism being a political movement, the extract uses such language to encourage listeners support, for example, ‘these evils chiefly of a political and social cast arise from one source – class legislation’ (L. 20-L. 21). Steadman Jones, secondary source 2, supports this notion by stating ‘the growth and decline of Chartism was a function of its capacity to persuade its constituency to interpret distress or discontent within the terms of its political language’ (p. 37). Evidence for Chartism been an inclusive cultural community also exists in the extract. The movement did not adhere to the times’ hierarchical style of society as it allowed anybody to join, the speaker demonstrates the movement’s inclusiveness by addressing women who were often excluded from politics, ‘I am glad to meet the brave men and fair women of York’ (L. 10). Chartism was all-embracing of the working classes; six working men were deliberated included on the committee that discussed the People’s Charter. The speaker addresses this group several times with ‘Working men’ (L. ), ‘Honourable gentlemen, I mean by this name the working class only’ (L. 17), and ‘the labouring class, are regarded as a cipher in importance’ (L. 22-L. 23). Ellen Yeo, secondary source 3, states the working classes were quite capable of creating their own politics just as they were proficient manufacturers in the economy. Chartismâ₠¬â„¢s ideal of giving power to the people already occurred within the movement as it gave people a political voice, the National Petition’s allowed people whose opinion was rarely consulted by Parliament to put down their signature with a feeling of power and pride. Evidence for all three explanations for Chartism’s support exists in the extract. However I personally conclude that the main focus and draw of support was the movement’s political goals as the speech uses political language to acquire agitators and fight for electoral reform. Many political issues are also addressed not just male suffrage, evidence for economic and cultural factors are present too. I believe that economic slumps increased support as protestors could voice their resentment of suffering, and inclusiveness helped to provide this voice, yet it was the political focus that gave hope for change. 00 words Task 2 Write no more than 150 words for this task. Part 1 Briefly write down two or three pieces of feedback from your tutor on TMA 01. My tutor’s feedback on TMA01 included encouraging remarks regarding the structure and format of my work; I also received good comments on my referencing skills. However it was felt that I only just achieved the learni ng outcome of producing a relevant, reasoned answer. How have you used that feedback in preparing for TMA 02? Positive feedback showed that my work has a good structure with a clear introduction, main body and conclusion; I have therefore ensured that I did the same for TMA02. I also made sure to reference and use quotation marks around the phrases I included from the materials. In order to avoid unclear sentences in the essay I have studied material on both the Y180 and the BBC, ‘Skillswise’ website. This helped improve my sentence construction, grammar and punctuation, and ultimately the flow of my writing. Feedback proved helpful as it meant I made a conscious effort to keep my sentences short so they remain crisp in meaning. How to cite Chartism: Working Class and National Political Movement, Papers

Lessons I Learned from a Suicidal Arsonist

Lessons I Learned from a Suicidal Arsonist On Friday, September 26, I set out to travel from New York City back home to Madison. I dutifully arose at 4:00 a.m. to meet a car service, arriving at the airport with plenty of time to spare. Boarding went smoothly and we left the gate. I looked forward to a 10:36 a.m. landing in my hometown after 3 days at a conference in Denver and a week with my family and friends. I had wonderful plans for Friday evening and Saturday. Then the announcement came: There has been a fire in the Chicago air traffic control tower. All flights in and out of Chicago have been delayed. The guy across the aisle from me began cursing and waving his fists around. I resolved to take the news better than he was taking it. After calling United twice and spending an hour on hold, I managed to get rebooked through Atlanta. But when I landed in Atlanta there were three voice mail messages advising me that my flight to Madison had been cancelled, and one informing me that I had been rebooked on a flight the next day through Washington D.C. I would, if all went as re-planned, arrive in Madison at 9:12 p.m. Saturday night. The punch line is, I made it home. But there’s more. Throughout this adventure, I learned or was reminded of some valuable life lessons. Here are some of them: One person can truly make a difference. That guy Brian Howard who set a fire in the Chicago air traffic control tower was one single man who managed to paralyze air travel across the country for two days. I’m guessing he also affected security measures at air traffic control towers throughout the world. Yet so many of us sit around thinking we can’t make a difference. What are the extreme positive acts you could take to change something you want to change? Surrender to what’s so. When faced with the prospect of spending the night in Atlanta, I was not thrilled. But since all flights to Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago and pretty much all areas surrounding were cancelled, I decided the best plan was to surrender. I got on a line for customer service, hoping there might be a hotel voucher for me if Atlanta was my only overnight option. An hour later I was at the counter, having had some lovely conversations with other stranded travelers, and discovered that there were no more hotel vouchers remaining, and that my flight to D.C. was that very night. Suddenly I had a new reality before me, and I accepted that one too. It’s amazing how much my stress level went down when I dealt with what was so instead of wishing it were another way! It’s good to have friends everywhere. Through a combination of college connections and my dance community, as well as other life adventures, I have built a network of friends and family in almost every major U.S. city (and some overseas cities as well). Drop me in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, Austin, Tucson or Tel Aviv, and I will have a friendly place to lay my head. When I discovered I would be in Washington, D.C. for a night, I started calling friends, one of whom, my college buddy Sara, was happy to put me up for the night. I had not seen her in about 10 years, so it was a great treat to spend unexpected time with her. Not only that, but she had kale in her fridge, a blender, and a free pass to her gym which we used to attend a class together Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon we swam together in an outdoor pool, well after any such pool in Madison would ever be open. I also saw a high school football game that was highlighted on Fox 5 Friday night! I was well taken care of. And I got on a deep l evel that I have led my life well to be able to call on so many people to help. Of course I would do the same for all of them. Talk to strangers. In the customer support line and on various airplanes Friday and Saturday, I met some other waylaid travelers. It was good to connect with humanity. They put my situation in perspective, and helped me out by watching my bag while I went to plug in my phone, whose battery was on its last legs. One woman guided me where I needed to go in D.C. to get to the suburban Metro stop where I met my college friend Sara. I noticed I felt fairly upbeat given the monkey wrench that had been thrown into my life, and on one of my plane rides I identified why: I was talking to strangers! In an article I read on the plane in Success (which is quickly becoming my favorite magazine), I discovered that a social science study by researcher and professor at Harvard Business School, Michael Norton, Ph.D., showed that â€Å"talking with strangers can be at least as important to our daily happiness as talking to our close friends and family.† Norton confirmed this to be true regardless of personality type. I know it is true for me! I always feel more energized when I connect with the people around me than when I retreat into my shell. On Saturday night my flight departed from D.C. on time and landed in Madison 30 minutes early. My housesitter Mariah picked me up and drove me home, where I arrived fairly exhausted yet grateful. I slept well that night, knowing that I am well-loved, resourceful, connected, and able to handle the challenges that one suicidal arsonist  threw in my direction. 🙂 This is a good reminder to travel a couple of days early for any important event. You never know what might happen! Log in to Reply

Language Learning Activities Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 2

Language Learning Activities - Essay Example From this paper it is clear that the linkword method, on the other hand, involves using images to link a word in a learner’s first language with a word in the foreign language the learner is learning. For example if an English speaker is learning French the instructor would provide the learner with an image of the object and its English word, and then link it with a French word for the image. In Krashen’s theory of second language acquisition there are five main hypotheses used to understand the process of language acquisition/language learning. These hypotheses are the acquisition-learning hypothesis, the monitor hypothesis, the natural order hypothesis, the input hypothesis and the affective filter hypothesis. According to the paper these three methods have advantages and drawbacks. There are certain fundamental principles that ensure success of TPR as a learning activity during the process of language learning. These principles are built upon the second language acqu isition theory by Stephen Krashen. The first principle states a language can be learned easier when a student can be in a position to receive a lot of comprehensible input from the natural surrounding. Comprehensible input means something that is simply understandable through communication which Krashen commonly refers to as the communicative act. The second principle is that a language learner benefits greatly from a ‘silent period’ during the learning process. The silent period is the period when the learner tries to understand and to respond to language instructions without attempting to speak. The silent period is natural and language learners speak only when language has fully developed in their brain. A learner will undergo a process of learning where he/she just receives input but stays for a certain period of time before they can speak the language.

In the past several decades, management experts have undergone a revolution in how they define leadership and what their attitudes are toward it. They have gone from a very classical autocratic approach to a very creative, participative approach. Somewhere along the line, it was determined that not everything old was bad and not everything new was good. Rather, different styles were needed for different situations and each leader needed to know when to exhibit a particular approach. 1.3.Leadership Styles Can Be Adopted For Different Situations A leadership style survey is a innovative thinking of starting about leadership. using leadership style in organization is a different way from leadership competencies of explaining leadership. Leadership style is the essential quality in the organization, implementing plans, innovative thinking, initiative, motivating the team members Three of the most basic leadership styles are: Autocratic Laissez-faire Democratic Autocratic: This is something one peson decision, the leader tells the employees what to do and what not to do, the employees dont have any option they have to follow their leader instructions. The employees dont have the liberal freedom by thinking of innovative or they cant take any initiatives in the work or growth for the organization. This style can be followed only if the employees have all the sources in the hand, because its something the leader orders to the employees and they follow them, so if every information is available to the employees they can finish the work with in the time frame of the limit. Actually this type of style should not be used as it is a emergency case. If we need initiatives and commitment from our employees we have to motivate our employees, so we have to follow the participative style. In this autocratic style we have a gap leaders and employees this leads to improper communication and understanding. Laissez Faire: In this style the leader gives the full liberty to the employees to take there own decision. But its not something final what the employee does, the employee has every rights to take the decision, However leader is responsible for whatever the decision is been made, The decision can be made where the employee should know about the in and out of the process and analyse the situation how the decision can be made, we cant make the blind decision, we can set the target to complete the task. This is not a style we can blame the employees if things went wrong, its something we are trusting employees and having confidence of the people who work below us. We should not afraid of using this style, we can use it wisely, by following this style employees will gain confidence and they can grow as an future leader. Democratic: This is the current style used in the organization, this style leader and employee merge together and comes to the final decision. Because certain things can be assessed only by the employees and not by the leader. The work done by the employees cannot be predicted how to handle this issue in the hectic situation. So the leader has no other go to contact the employees for final decision. Its not something the employees can take the final decision, it should be authorized by the leader, then it may get in to final decision. This style shows the good understanding between the employees and the leader. The employee recruited are highly skilled. Using this style will benefit the organization as well as it creates the good relation with the leader and employees. 2.1.The Selected theories of management and leadership have on organizational strategy: Under the autocratic leadership style in the organisation, The leader has the power of centralized decision making in the organisation. This is common to the directive style from organizational situational leadership Autocratic managers do not entertain any idea or initiatives from coworkers. The autocratic management is helpful to the managers because it gives a recognition to the team and organisation as well as it motivates the manager. It helps in quick decision making, as he is the only to decide for the whole team and the manager keeps decision to himself until he feels that is necessary to be shared to the coworkers. The autocrat tells others what not to do and what to do but not necessarily why it might be an appropriate model for the organisation where the team has low experience and skills or It has to be used in the effective way in the organisation with modern work forces. Participative or democratic style The democratic leadership style advantage decision making by the group as shown, such as first leader will set up the meeting with the group and he asks for the suggestions then he will give instructions to the group members. This style is more helpful for the managers so that the group member will be cooperative to the managers, and they may be motivated effectively and positively by the managers. The decision of the democratic leader is not unilateral as with the autocrat, because generally they used to discuss with group members and they will get a final idea with the group, and finally the manager will go for suggestion and ideas so that all the group members will participate by them. Democratic is not something is put to the vote it is the manager involves in to the participation of the group of members and make decision consulting with the group member and he has every right to take the own decision and cascade the final decision to the team members. If some one could not follo w or discuss with the team members then it may be a weak leadership. Free rein style or Laissez-faire A free-rein leader does not lead, leaves the group freely entirely on its own as shown; such as leader allows maximum liberal freedom to the group members, i.e they have given a liberal freedom and suggestions in choosing their own policies and procedure methods. 2.2.Leadership Stretegy Supports organizational direction: Its to remember the alternative situations for alternative leadership styles in the organisation. In the emergency time we have only little time only and where as in designated authority has more experience in the organisation or the rest of the whole team if they follow the autocratic leadership that would be more effective. In the case of highly motivated and designated team with a knowledge level of expertise, a more democratic or laissez faire style may be much more effective. When I complete the strategic leadership style survey I should remember that the leadership style has adopted and that would be the most effective and achieves the objective of the whole while balancing the interest of members of individuals. Also this leadership style survey is provided the answer but its not something we got the right answers, but I have the opportunities to ask the right knowledge questions in a right time about the leadership style at present and in the future cases. 3.1. Appropriate Method to review current leadership requirements: Jun Liu Business School, Renmin University of China, Beijing 100872, China Xiaoyu Liu School of Labor Relations Human Resources, Renmin University of China, Beijing 100872, China Abstract Leadership research has gone through several phases of development in the past 80 years or so. The paper identifies the major theories in each phase, and investigates the strengths and weaknesses of the research. Among those theories, transformational/charismatic leadership and leader-member exchange (LMX) are heavily discussed. The paper also discusses the future trend of research in leadership areas. Keywords: Review, Transformational Leadership, LMX Leadership can be defined as a process that an individual influences a group of individuals to implement strategies and achieve the collective goals (Yukl, 2002). Research in the area seeks to find out what types of leaders are likely to be successful and what factors determine leadership effectiveness. Generally, leadership research has gone though four paradigms: trait approach, behavioral approach, situational approach, and the contemporary theories of leadership. The paradigms of leadership theories shift with the progress from static to dynamic view of leadership with the trait and behavioral theories reflecting a personal, the situational theories an interpersonal, and the contemporary theories a relational approach to conceptualizing leadership. That is to say leadership has been examined as intrapersonal competencies, interpersonal processes, and relational dynamics. More specifically, I review those approaches, their strengths and weaknesses as followed: The trait approach The trait theories assumed that leaders were born, not made. In the literature, Stogdill (1948, 1974) completed two comprehensive reviews by synthesizing more than 200 studies of the trait approach. His two surveys identified a group 3.2.plan for the development of future situations requiring leadership -poor management performance -low   employee morale -unstable   organization structure -unsustainable business practices -high   employee turnover -unable to   manage diversity -Poor   Measured organizational performance improvement -Decreased quality of management -Poor   Healthy organizational climate- -Lower   morale -Increased   labor   turnover -Lack Organizational and personal growth -Poor teamwork -Lack   of   Retention strategies-talent leaving   the organization. -chronic industrial relations problems   -no means of resolving employee grievances   -increasing   employee turnover   -inter-group conflicts   -dissatisfaction with pay and conditions   -unclear job roles   -no clear performance measures   -poor recruitment standards / practices   -no management development programs   -no induction training for new employees   -critical skill shortages   -inter-departmental conflict   -lack   of   sufficient skills / power bases in the organization. -lack   of   appropriate leadership skills within the organization?   -lack   organization structure flexibilty   in the face of changing demands. staff have no clear roles and responsibilities?   -lack   of   procedures and management practices to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks. -lack   of   Ã‚  staff   potential spotting   Ã‚  and development   Ã‚  for the future. -lack   of   staff encouragement   to perform well through the giving of recognition, feedback, etc. -staff   do no   know what their expected performance standards are.   -organizations systems   do not encourage effective performance among your staff. -systems are   not   consistent across the organization. -there are   no clear rewards for effective performance within the   work group.   4.1. From Failure to success Essay

Robert Kennedy’s statement that â€Å"Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly† has been painfully evident in my life. Until recently, I had never dared to fail greatly at anything, and as a result, I never achieved greatly at anything either. Luckily, I have learned the importance of attempting something when there’s a looming possibility of failure. At Boys’ State this summer, I spent a week living with 300 other young men while learning about how North Carolina’s government works. To give us a firm grasp of the governmental process, each floor elected town officials, each dorm elected county officials, and the three dorms together elected the state officials. The Boys’ State program also had its own moot court program from which Supreme Court Justices were elected. At Boys’ State, I ran for positions in the town and county government, and for Supreme Court Justice. Of the seven positions I competed for, I only won two elections. I count this as a failure because the only positions I won were positions that had no candidates to oppose me. The loss that affected me the most was Supreme Court Justice. This was the position I had wanted to win even before I arrived at Boys’ State, and I gave up all of my afternoon activity time so that I could participate in the moot court program and remain an eligible candidate for Supreme Court Justice. Unfortunately, the elections for justices were the last of all the voting, and by midnight, everybody wanted to get back to their dorms so the time for our speeches was cut from one minute to ten seconds. Needless to say, I was so unprepared for the sudden change of events, that I barely had time to say my name and one reason I was running before I ran out of time. I lost the election, but the loss taught me that I needed to become more visible so that I would not have to depend on a speech for people to realize that I was a person they should vote for. However, if I had the chance to go back and change anything I had done there, I probably wouldn’t change a thing. The reasons for this are not as difficult to understand as they probably should be. Firstly, if I went back and changed anything I had done then, I would not have learned that lesson, and would now be lacking a very important experience in my life. Secondly, good things also came from my loss of the election for Supreme Court Justice. In my failure, I brought the  attention of the gubernatorial candidate onto me. The next morning, he asked me if I would like to be his Secretary of Crime Control and Public Safety which is one of the highest positions at Boys’ State. After a moment of shock, I immediately accepted the position. Thus, as a result of my own great failure, I achieved greatly.

The last emperor of the Qing Dynasty, and thus the last emperor of China, Aisin-Gioro Puyi lived through the fall of his empire, the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, the Chinese Civil War, and the founding of the Peoples Republic of China.   Born to a life of unimaginable privilege, he died as a humble assistant gardener under the communist regime. When he passed away of lung kidney cancer in 1967, Puyi was under the protective custody of members of the Cultural Revolution, completing a life story thats truly stranger than fiction. Early Life of the Last Emperor Aisin-Gioro Puyi was born on February 7, 1906, in Beijing, China to Prince Chun (Zaifeng) of the Aisi-Gioro clan of the  Manchu royal family and Youlan of the Guwalgiya clan, a member of one of the most influential royal families in China. On both sides of his family, ties were tight with the de facto ruler of China, the Empress Dowager Cixi.   Little Puyi was only two years old when his uncle, the Guangxu Emperor, died of arsenic poisoning on November 14, 1908, and the Empress Dowager selected the little boy as the new emperor before she died the very next day. On December 2, 1908, Puyi was formally enthroned as the Xuantong Emperor, but the toddler did not like the ceremony and reportedly cried and struggled as he was named the Son of Heaven. He was officially adopted by the Dowager Empress Longyu. The child emperor spent the next four years in the Forbidden City, cut off from his birth family and surrounded by a host of eunuchs who had to obey his every childish whim. When the little boy discovered that he had that power, he would order the eunuchs caned if they displeased him in any way.  The only person who dared discipline the tiny tyrant was his wet-nurse and substitute mother-figure, Wen-Chao Wang. A Brief End to His Rule On February 12, 1912, Dowager Empress Longyu stamped the Imperial Edict of the Abdication of the Emperor, formally ending Puyis rule. She reportedly got 1,700 pounds of silver from General Yuan Shikai for her cooperation — and the promise that she would not be beheaded. Yuan declared himself President of the Republic of China, ruling until December of 1915 when he bestowed the title of Hongxian Emperor on himself in 1916, attempting to start a new dynasty, but died three months later of renal failure before he ever took the throne. Meanwhile, Puyi remained in the Forbidden City, not even aware of the Xinhai Revolution that rocked his former empire. In July of 1917, another warlord named Zhang Xun restored Puyi to the throne for eleven days, but a rival warlord called Duan Qirui nixed the restoration. Finally, in 1924, yet another warlord, Feng Yuxian, expelled the 18-year-old former emperor from the Forbidden City. Puppet of the Japanese Puyi took up residence in the Japanese embassy in Beijing for one and a half years and in 1925 moved to the Japanese concession area of Tianjin, toward the northern end of Chinas coastline. Puyi and the Japanese had a common opponent in the ethnic Han Chinese who had ousted him from power.   The former emperor wrote a letter to the Japanese Minister of War in 1931 requesting help in recovering his throne. As luck would have it, the Japanese had just concocted an excuse to invade and occupy Manchuria, the homeland of Puyis ancestors, and in November of 1931, Japan installed Puyi as their puppet emperor of the new state of Manchukuo. Puyi was not pleased that he ruled only Manchuria, rather than the whole of China, and was further chafed under Japanese control where he was even forced to sign an affidavit that if he had a son, the child would be raised in Japan. Between 1935 and 1945, Puyi was under the observation and orders of a Kwantung Army officer who spied on the Emperor of Manchukuo and relayed orders to him from the Japanese government. His handlers gradually eliminated his original staff, replacing them with Japanese sympathizers. When Japan surrendered at the end of World War II, Puyi boarded a flight for Japan, but he was captured by the Soviet Red Army and forced to testify at the war crimes trials in Tokyo in 1946 then remaining in Soviet custody in Siberia until 1949. When Mao Zedongs Red Army prevailed in the Chinese Civil War, the Soviets turned the now 43-year-old former emperor over to the new communist government of China. Puyis Life Under Maos Regime Chairman Mao ordered Puyi sent to the Fushun War Criminals Management Center, also called Liaodong No. 3 Prison, a so-called re-education camp for prisoners of war from the Kuomintang, Manchukuo, and Japan. Puyi would spend the next ten years interned in the prison, constantly bombarded with communist propaganda. By 1959, Puyi was ready to speak publicly in favor of the Chinese Communist Party, so he was released from the re-education camp and allowed to return to Beijing, where he got a job as an assistant gardener at the Beijing Botanical Gardens and in 1962 married a nurse named Li Shuxian. The former emperor even worked as an editor for the Chinese Peoples Political Consultative Conference from 1964 on, and also authored an autobiography, From Emperor to Citizen, which was supported by top party officials Mao and Zhou Enlai. Targeted Again Until His Death When Mao sparked the Cultural Revolution in 1966, his Red Guards immediately targeted Puyi as the ultimate symbol of old China. As a result, Puyi was placed under protective custody and lost many of the simple luxuries he had been granted in the years since his release from prison. By this time, his health was failing as well. On October 17, 1967, at the age of just 61, Puyi, Chinas last emperor, died of kidney cancer. His strange and turbulent life ended in the city where it had begun, six decades and three political regimes earlier.
